Grade 3

Welcome to third grade! This year your child will have an opportunity to grow intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally in a positive and faith based classroom. They will also develop a sense of strong responsibility and build lasting friendships. Our day-to-day schedule involves active learning in multiple subject areas including: Language Arts, Math, Science, Religion, Social Studies, as well as a variety of specialties. Computer technology is integrated into our daily lessons and is enhanced by the use of our SMARTboard.

This grade is filled with so many exciting and academic projects. Your child will participate in a third grade play, write a presidential research paper, go on exciting field trips and learn about Saints!

The goal of the third grade Language Arts curriculum is to develop competency in communication skills. These skills include reading, writing, listening and speaking. These are continually integrated within all content areas of the curriculum. Through concrete experiences, reading literature and learning about the structure of stories, poems and other writing forms, students gain valuable information necessary for increasing comfort and ease in the writing process.

McGraw-Hill My Math is an innovative approach to elementary math. Each child interacts with their text in multiple ways throughout the learning process. Written specifically for the Common Core State Standards, McGraw-Hill My Math offers personalized vocabulary, student-created examples, online games, and downloadable apps that help students move from learning abstract concepts to direct application. Leveled homework is available to meet the needs of each student.

The Full Option Science System (F.O.S.S.), developed by the University of California, Berkeley, and published and distributed by Encyclopedia Britannica Educational Corporation is a hands-on approach to Science. This approach is recognized as an effective way to help elementary students construct a solid foundation of scientific knowledge and enhance the development of scientific ways of thinking. Students investigate, experiment, gather data, organize results, and draw conclusions based on their own actions. Language Arts for grades 1-5 consists of the four language processes: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. We use a research-based language arts curriculum that is aligned with state and national standards. The program provides differentiated reading selections, opportunities for flexible grouping, a variety of literature genres, and varied forms of assessments.

Third graders participate in the life of the Church and explore their faith as members of a community. Christ Our Life, published by Loyola Press, is our Religion series. Additional activities that follow the seasons of the Church, daily prayer, school prayer services, adoration, and weekly Mass enhance the curriculum and encourage participation by the students.
