Grade 1

Welcome to first grade! This year the students are like butterflies, or transformers if you prefer, as they make the transition from kindergarten towards the independence that will be needed in second grade and beyond…and we learn to READ! We strive to make our classroom an exciting, welcoming, diverse, accepting place that is a safe place to learn, question, explore, and feel valued in. Our days are filled as we integrate: Language Arts, Math, Science, Religion, Social Studies, how to be a good friend and get along with others, the importance of creative thinking, ways to use the many gifts that God has given us, technology, exploring to find answers to many diverse questions that we have, and of course – reading.

The main goal of our Language Arts curriculum is to develop the skills that are needed to effectively be able to communicate. These skills include reading, decoding, speaking, writing, penmanship, and listening. Some of the experiences that your child will have in first grade are:

  • Learning about story structure, genres, phonics and other clues to decoding, sentence structure, characters and settings as we read, and are read to.
  • Acting out literature and beginning to speak and read with expression and fluency.
  • Gaining experience speaking through beginning animal and book reports, demonstrations, peer teaching, and Readerʼs Theatre in a safe, friendly atmosphere.
  • Writing sentences, learning parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives), capitalization, punctuation, spelling, penmanship, and ways to add information to make better sentences and get their point across.
  • Ways to be good listeners to each other.

In first grade, we will use the hands-on, experimental method of FOSS (Full Option Science System) to study:

  • Air and Weather where we learn about:
  • weather, itʼs causes
  • how hot and cold air currents move,
  • how to graph data to make it easier to read and understand
  • how to use the graphs to draw conclusions
  • Balance and Motion where we learn about:
  • ways things can move
  • how to use balance points, counterweights, fulcrums to make systems balance
  • how to apply that information and understanding to draw a hypothesis of other systems
  • create our balancing systems of our own design

McGraw Hill My Math is an approach to elementary math that is written specifically to meet the Common Core Standards. It helps children to learn the basics of addition, subtraction, number sense, geometry, time, and money using a variety of methods and tools such as:

  • with their textbook
  • building models
  • drawing pictures
  • writing and/or orally telling how and why things do or don't work

In Religion, your child will learn more about their faith and God by reading, listening, drawing, modeling, and writing projects about:

  • how our choices and actions can help to create positive change in our world
  • the Holy Family
  • learning about Jesusʼ life, death, and resurrection
  • the seven sacraments
  • the church calendar
  • learning common prayers (Our Father, Hail Mary)
  • using the knowledge of Jesusʼ teachings to get along with others and care for and about others

Our World is our Social Studies text which we use to learn through readings, speakers, activities, plays, stories, drawings, and models about:

  • our community
  • people who serve our community
  • wants/needs
  • types of communities
  • geography (oceans, continents, types of geographical features)

On top of these areas we are also able to enjoy specialists such as: Art, Music, Physical Education, Spanish, and Library. In this year your child will have a fun year of learning with exciting field trips, projects, papers, experiments, play, discovery and of course…reading!
