Saint Mark’s offers swimming to students in 1st through 8th grade.
The season usually begins the second week of January with practices twice a week a various pools located in Saint Paul. The swim season ends with a prelims and a finals usually around the end of March or early April. All swimmers get to compete in prelims, and if they finish in the top 16 in their age category they compete in finals at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. During the season swimmers are broken down into groups based on age and skill level. We focus on developing the proper technique at all ages.
Swimmers are taught all of the strokes with proper form for competing in races. The stronger swimmers that have better form or more experience will work on swimming longer sets to build endurance. As the swimmers get older and become stronger their sets become longer and more challenging, while still focusing on skills and proper form and technique.
Swimmers will also learn starts, relay exchanges, and flip turns. There are usually 3-4 swim meets during the season allowing swimmers can compete in their preferred events. The swim team is hard work, but it teaches students an essential skill that they will use for the rest of their lives.
